Never Get Old, A How-to Guide, or, Conversations only nurses can have.

co-worker, 'man, i hope i never get old."

nurse j, 'oh yeah. i hear ya.'

co-worker, '4 bottles of insulin. that's how i'll go out.'

nurse j, 'four bottles, huh? how'dja figure that out?'

co-worker, 'i had a patient that had only 3. and they still made it. so when i go out, i'll do 4.'

nurse j, 'three bottles would've been enough, the thing was somebody found your patient. the trick would be making sure you weren't found in time.'

co-worker, 'yeah, i guess you're right.'

nurse j, 'a little planning goes a long way.'

They used to use insulin for "shocking" patients on Psych in the good ol' days....instead of electricity. Not sure if it worked any better. :) Maybe a muscle relaxant cocktail along with it might be good....

Btw. "old" isn't that bad if you can stay in great shape. It's the bad health that gets u. And from my experience "old" just sneaks up on you - "old" is someone else's age...not the age you are at at the moment....so not too sure how to know when to *do* something about it.... :(

I don't know.... hypoglycemia sounds like a pretty unpleasant way to go. Perhaps KCl might be less unpleasant? Phenobarbital? Dilaudid?

Oh the typical nurse's black humor. We do this a lot don't we? I can also sit at the dinner table and mow down my food while vividly describing my patient's umpteenth C-Diff bowel movement.

@Cartoon Characters, interestingly enough, this came from a co-worker that is one of those run marathons, eats right, skinny as a model types that is probably in her 40's but looks better than 31 yo me.

OldMDGirl, i think it is a combination of availibility and painlessness. wouldn't really just be the last great nap?

Running Wildly, yeah. i have to remember not to do that when i'm having dinner with non-medical friends.

J and RW: My wife and I get going sometimes, completely forgetting there are civilians present. More than once I've glanced up and caught the eye of a bystander slightly green around the gills. Haha!
